Neville Chamberlain
Arthur Neville Chamberlain was born on the 18th March 1869. He was the British Prime Minister until he resigned due to the struggles of leading Britain through a war. Soon after, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill took his place as Prime Minister.
As Neville Chamberlain was trying to prevent war, he held a meeting with Adolf Hitler - who was leader of the Nazi Party and the Fuhrer of Germany. Neville Chamberlain decided to make an appeasement with Adolf Hitler which stated that the German Dictator would not invade anymore countries. Hitler agreed to this pact although it was not kept for long as he continued to invade Poland which then lead to the outbreak of World War II. The speech Neville Chamberlain gave to announce war can be listened to here.
Life before Leading
Neville and his wife, Anne, had two children- called Dorothy and Francis- and, like him, they were both born into a political family. Neville's father, Joseph Chamberlain, was a successful politician in the late years of the 1800's. As the starter to Neville's career in politics, he was appointed the honour of becoming Mayor of Birmingham. In 1918, Chamberlain was elected as a member of the British Conservative Parliament for Ladywood in Birmingham.
Chamberlain's wish for peace
Due to living through the horrors of World War I, Neville Chamberlain was determined to remain peace throughout the globe, especially in his home nation, Britain. As he became Prime Minister and became gradually more powerful, Chamberlain had a great impact on the thought of world peace. However, this peace didn't last very long as WWII began. When the Second World War started, Chamberlain thought more about what had happened in World War I and the great damage that was made; which was why he wanted peace in Europe.
Chamberlain's final years
Because he couldn't take the stress of leading the United Kingdom through such a monstrous war, he resigned on 10th May 1940, only 9 months int0 the war, and Winston Churchill took over, who lead the nation to victory.
Unfortunately, Chamberlain could never see his country as proud as it could be, as he died of stomach cancer the year he finalised his career as Prime Minister, on November 9th 1940.Winston Churchill and Neville Chamberlain were close friends before the war and if Neville had survived his battle with cancer, surely they would have been after.
